Vistry marks start of work on major new development in Chesterfield

Work has officially started on 163 new homes at Mastin Moor, Chesterfield, marking an important milestone in the delivery of a major new community for the area.

Vistry, the UK’s leading provider of mixed-tenure homes, was joined by Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, and representatives from Devonshire Property Group to celebrate the start of construction. The homes are being delivered in partnership with Sage Homes, England’s largest provider of newly built affordable homes, and will provide a range of affordable housing options for local people.

Located to the east of Bolsover Road, the development forms part of a wider 650-home masterplan being brought forward by Devonshire Property Group. The wider vision for Mastin Moor includes later living accommodation, a local centre, extensive new parkland and an extension to the existing community garden, helping to create a connected and sustainable neighbourhood for current and future residents.

The wider site is also home to the Construction Skills Hub operated by Chesterfield College, supporting local training opportunities and helping people gain the skills needed for careers in construction.

Dave Bradley, Managing Director of Vistry North Midlands, said: “Starting work at Mastin Moor is a proud moment for everyone involved. This development will deliver 163 high-quality homes and play an important role in creating a thriving, inclusive community where local people can put down roots. We are delighted to be working with Sage Homes, Devonshire Property Group, Chesterfield Borough Council and local stakeholders to bring forward a scheme that will make a positive and lasting contribution to Mastin Moor and the wider Chesterfield area.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “It's great to see works starting on the next phase of this development. Not only will it provide much needed affordable homes but also it will contribute to ensuring our young people have opportunity to succeed in careers in the construction industry. This will be achieved by Vistry working closely with the Construction Skills Hub. The Hub, which has Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) National Skills Academy for Construction status, was established by Chesterfield Borough Council, in partnership with the Devonshire Group, and delivered by Chesterfield College and Derby University to ensure young people have the opportunity to gain experience and insight of modern methods of construction as well as supporting work experience placements and apprenticeships. I look forward to seeing this development progress and hearing from the young people who will benefit from the opportunities it creates."

Andrew Byrne, Director of Devonshire Property Group, said: “Seeing this second phase of Mastin Moor get underway is a significant step forward in the delivery of the wider masterplan. We are delighted to welcome Vistry and Sage Homes to Mastin Moor and Chesterfield. Their commitment to providing affordable homes to rent or buy, and to creating diverse and vibrant communities, is a key factor in the partnership and aligns closely with the core values of the Devonshire Group. Vistry’s use of timber frame construction also demonstrates its commitment to creating sustainable homes for the future. We wish them every success.”

Vistry will continue to work closely with partners and local stakeholders throughout construction to ensure the new neighbourhood reflects community aspirations, supports long-term growth and contributes to the wider regeneration of Mastin Moor.
